Gov. Henry McMaster has named a new chairman for the S.C. Research Authority, changing the board's leadership at a moment when the agency is seeking to sharpen its focus.

The Charleston Defense Contractors Association (CDCA), a nonprofit focused on the preservation and growth of the defense and technology related industries in the Charleston and Lowcountry regions, is now accepting submissions for its 7th Annual Student Mobile App Competition.  The contest is open to middle school to college students throughout the Southeast. A recent economic report from Darla Moore School of Business at University of South Carolina (USC) revealed that Charleston is one of the leading defense and technology hubs in the U.S., contributing $10.6 billion to the overall $24.1 billion annual economic impact for South Carolina.

We all know Charleston, South Carolina for its beautiful beaches, tourism, foodie scene, leisurely pace and southern hospitality. While more and more families, businesses and top talent flock to Charleston, most don’t realize the extent to which the technology, government and defense communities are growing within Charleston and its surrounding areas. 

“Surprising to most, the defense industry actually has a higher economic impact in South Carolina than tourism,” said Josh Hatter, President, CDCA

The Palmetto State’s military community collectively creates an annual economic impact of $24.1 billion, according to a new study released by the S.C. Military Base Task Force.

The Charleston area has the largest military presence in the state — 3,810 service members, 71,011 veterans and 4,612 Department of Defense civilians, according to a study released Wednesday.

“Most don’t realize the extent to which the technology, government and defense communities are growing within Charleston and its surrounding areas. These leading industries, particularly those related to defense, are the core to the growing attractiveness of Charleston beyond just weekend tourists,” wrote Josh Hatter, President, CDCA.
